Where: Sonkajarvi, Finland
This nutty race is based on an ancient Finnish tradition where it was considered normal for men to steal women from neighbouring villages. The most famous legend tells of Herkko Rosvo-Ronkainen who repeatedly snatched ladies and food from villages, carried them off to his home in the forest and ate one element and, well, what do you think? Not such a nice chap!
Keeping to this tradition, the carrier and carryee don’t have to be married to each other, or anyone else as far as that goes! Contestants from all over the world compete in the Wife Carrying World Championships. Winners across the 250 metre course tend to hail from Estonia or Finland. Obviously people from other countries are far too refined to steal another man’s woman…
