Where: Oaxaca, Mexico
Why radishes? Don’t ask, I don’t know!
The town of Oaxaca in Mexico is packed full of radish sculpters (erm, I said don’t ask!) in the days running up to Christmas during the annual Radish Festival (La Noche de Rá¡banos). Prizes are offered to the best sculptures, with the winning contestants boasting cash prizes. Everyone else just scoffs buñuelos (deep-fried doughnuts drenched in syrup) and then throws the plate over a shoulder. You can ask about this one however, as the number of shattered pieces are said to foretell the fortune for the coming year.
