Harbin Ice and Snow Festival

Harbin Ice and Snow Festival

Harbin Ice and Snow Festival

Where: Harbin, China

When: December

With a freezing season of over six months, the northeast Chinese city of Harbin is known as a “City of Ice” and one of the leading cultural ice-and-snow centres in the world. The longevity of its winter, and the high plasticity and hardness of the ice blocks that are cut from the Songhua River, ensure the perfect conditions for ice and snow sculpture.

Some of the events that occur during this festival include an ice lantern show, ice & snow sculpture displays & competitions, winter swimming, ice hockey, speed-skating and alpine & cross country skiing competitions. When it gets too cold, there are several indoor events, such as exhibitions of art calligraphy and photography, folklore shows, ethnic song and dance parties and a commodities fair and trade negotiations. There are also weddings that are conducted on the ice-covered river.
