Where: Lerwick, Shetland, Scotland
Up Helly Aa is an annual festival that involves a procession of up to a thousand Viking-clad participants, and culminates in flaming torches being thrown into replica Viking longships.
Up Helly Aa is a tradition that originated in the 1880s. Since then the festival has been an annual occurrence in the Shetland calendar (barring several postponements due to wars and other national-interest events).
An incredibly strong experience is promised to all who attend. There is a public holiday in the region the following day for “recovery”, so you can be assured also of a good night out!!
