Rainforest Music Festival

Rainforest Music Festival

Rainforest Music Festival

Where: Kuching, Borneo, Malaysia

When: July

If you ever fancied dancing in a rainforest in the mud and tropical rain to music by performers from all over the world, then this event is most certainly for you. The Rainforest Music Festival is one of the largest music festivals in Southeast Asia, and is an exciting mix of culture, workshops, and live entertainment held every year just outside of Kuching, Malaysia. Typically, over 20,000 people annually attend the three-day festival to experience music and traditional instruments from nearly every continent.

The Festival is held annually at the sprawling Sarawak Cultural Village resort, which is surrounded by lush rainforest. There are two main stages that come alive in the evening, together with workshops, cultural demonstrations, and miniature shows that fill the afternoon with exciting activities. The wooden walkways that circle a small lake are lined with booths for food, souvenirs, and crafts, with the rest of the grounds of the Sarawak Cultural Village being well-maintained and interesting to explore. Traditional longhouses are utilised as venues for workshops and other musical demonstrations to keep everyone entertained until the headlining performers begin.

The rain (when it comes – and it does come) has no real impact on the festival, except that the grassy field in front of the two stages is soon converted to a big, muddy pit by people dancing. Perfect!!
