Tumpek Wayang

Tumpek Wayang

Tumpek Wayang

Where: Bali, Indonesia

When: August

Tumpek Wayang is a sacred Balinese holiday , and is a special time for the local and traditional puppeteers. Traditional puppets (Wayang) are liberated from storage and displayed to the Lord of the Puppeteers, and special offerings are also made. Many of the puppets’ current owners have  inherited them from their ancestors, making these marionettes incredibly old and valuable .

You may witness special rituals, which are performed to protect children who are born during Tumpek Wayang from spiritual harm, as strangely, it’s considered unlucky to be born at this time.
