Drummers at the Anjin Festival

Drummers at the Anjin Festival

Where: Ito City, Shizuoka, Japan

When: August

The Anjin Festival commemorates the launching of the first western ships to be built in Japan. Sometimes refered to as the William Adams Festival, after the Englishman who was responsible for the building of the ships, the event is centred along the Matsukawa River in Ito City, Shizuoka.

Lanterns are launched onto the river, which float out to sea. There’s a ceremony and a parade and also a fantastic drum competition, in which the competitors display no lack of skill, strength and athleticism. The whole event culminates in a phenomenal, hour-long fireworks display over the sea.

Not to be missed if you can avoid it!
